Biography:

The Brazilian band formed by the Martins brothers plays mostly their own compositions, but also traditional brazilian numbers and eventually rock classics (even Led Zeppelin!) rearranged according to Brasilian sonic universe. Fal (Fabio)Martins - a classically trained / awarded guitarist and a bossa/brazilian music performer– wrote and produced the songs , besides playing pianos guitars and singing. Nadia Martins (Vocals & co-lyricist ) is also a writer and has just finished her “ A Ray of Umbria” , a romance with a brazilian look at Umbrian (Italy ) people and culture to be released soon in Italy , where she lives.

What inspired him to be a musician?:
His love for the music and the artists I love since I was a kid, and of course an uncontrolable will and desire to play, write produce music.

Artist of the week - Diego Sales

I'm proud to introduce my next artist of the week.

The brilliant and talented, Diego Sales.

I met Diego Sales on myspace. We both fell in love with one another's music and quickly became good music friends.

Biography:

Diego Galvão was born on the 16th of January, 1982, in São Vicente, first city of Brazil and home town of Sombrinha, a great artist of Samba. He started to play bass and guitar at the age of fifteen. He displayed an early affinity for all types of music, in his adolescence, listening to the great masters of Funk, Jazz , Blues and Soul. At this time he started his first gigs playing as a bass player. Years later, he became a regular visitor to all the small bars in town, (called ¨Boteco¨ in Portuguese) in which, groups of Samba and Choro played songs of Cartola, Pixinguinha, Noel Rosa and other great names of Brazilian Popular Music. Soon after, he discovered the songs and the magic of João Gilberto. He has played in many different kinds of bands in Santos and São Paulo since 1999 as a bassist and guitarist. He has lived in Japan since 2005. In 2008 he started the project¨Bossa Nova Voz & Violão¨ to bring the values and the feelings of brazilian rhythms to the Japanese public.

Brian Wilson - An Inspiration for Troubled Times

I've been very moved over the last few years by Brian Wilson's life and work. Once the textbook case of the creative genius destroyed by mental illness, he returned to the legendary, unfinished 'Smile' album and brought it to completion. Now he's released a CD of new material that both tells the story of his journey back to wholeness and celebrates the state which made him who he was: California.

My favorite song from the new album is "Midnight's Another Day". I hope you enjoy it!

This song has always made me teary, but never as much as today.

I wish I had the chance to tell a special person of my life this message before she ended her life. Everything in life tends to make so many unrealistic expectations from us. Sometimes it's good just not to listen and take everything as a joke. Although there is nothing I can do for this girl anymore, I pray she is happy in heaven and free from the burdens she had in her short life. I'll never forget what a sweet girl she was..

Biography:

Khiem Tran is currently attending Boston University School of Management. He lives in a world filled with economic theories and numbers, so music is an escape for him. He finds peace and himself in his guitar. The way he sees music is that, there is no rule except for the restrictions you put on yourself. Music flows from within and it is undefined, which makes it so special in our conceptual world. He started out playing in D-suspended tuning and it became a special part of him. He wrote and experimented with a lot of contemporary classical and new age melodies. Soon he moved onto other tunings as well as standard. His interest in music is very broad; from classical, jazz, bossa, to house, indie folk, and hip hop.

What inspired you to be a musician?:

When he first picked up the guitar in high school, he was frustrated, studying it from a book and learning it himself. He soon realized that music isn't a defined language; it is a connection between the instrument and the artist. Since then, he just played how he felt, and it is an escape that he treasures.

Her name is Nara Leao

My first encounter with Nara Leao was when I watched the movie-documentary 'This is bossanova' at the end of 2007. At that time, I've only started listening to bossanova for around a year and started singing it for only a few months.

Throughout the documentary, her name came up many times which made me curious about why this musician is so special. As a newbie to bossanova and Brazilian music, I only knew the most famous musicians that my band members or friend told me about such as Antonio Carlos Jobim (The God hehe), Joao Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, Toquinho, Sergio Mendes etc...

It took me a few months to finally get her CD. The CD I chose (Dez Ano Depois) which is recorded in Paris is said to be one of her best, AND it its! I've listened to that album so many times I can almost sing along to each song now (and this is from a person who can't speak Portuguese). The CD is so impactful, it inspired me to make music of my own with my guitar.

There is something special in her eyes and in her voice that I can't describe, but it mesmerises me. It is so sweet and pure, yet so melancholy. I guess that is what they call the feeling of 'Saudade'.

Nara Leao (January 19, 1942 - June 7, 1989) was born in Espirito Santo and moved to Rio de Janeiro at a young age. Her father bought her first guitar when she was 12 years old. Great musicians like Carlos Lyra and Roberto Menescal taught her how to play the guitar.

In the 50s, she was a journalist and a performer. In the late 50s, she took part in the Bossanova revolution. She played at universities and started working with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Joao Gilberto, Chico Buraque and other great musicians. In 1963, she became a professional musician.

In the 70s, she moved to Paris and left the music industry to focus on her family. She returned to music in 1979. Soon after, she discovered she had a brain tumor. She recorded another 10 albums before she passed away. She died in 1989.

Artist of the week - Paul Sonnenberg

I am very honored to have Paul Sonnenberg as my first artist of the week.

Biography:

Paul Sonnenberg is a very talented singer, guitarist, song writer and lyricist.
He was born in Erie, Pennsylvania in early 1960. He began playing the guitar at 16. and wrote poetry and songs through high school. He was a spiritual seeker through the seventies, a personal growth junkie through the eighties, and a disillusioned former musician through the nineties.

Paul began in the early 'aughties' to learn to play the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, which reignited his love for the guitar and for singing. He recorded his first CD of this music (Bossanova) in 2004. He posted his first YouTube videos in 2006, and reached his 1 millionth YouTube view on Valentines Day, 2009. The effort to improve his music for YouTube led him to regular live performing. He formed Paul Sonnenberg's Trio Bossa Nova with percussionist Lynn Turner and flute player Shirley Fraser in 2008.
